Traditional HHDs Replaced by SSDs Hopefully

With the continuous requirements of the storage capacity and the speed of the disk drives, SSDs (solid-state drive) come into modern life and build a close relationship with us. Therefore, the traditional HHDs (hard disk drives) are likely to be replaced by SSDs. The promotion of the concept of hard disk can trace back to 2006 when some disk manufacturers had already put forwarded the concept of it. Keeping different from the traditional HHDs who adopt hard disk body, heads as well as motors, the SSDs are constructed by the control chip together with the memory chip.

Some experts in electronic components field predict that SSDs would replace HHDs finally in the following ten years, but it still faces some obstacles at present, such as, the immaturity of SSDs’ technology, obviously higher prices as well as unaffordable for some common companies.

Luckily, the current SSDs’ prices are dropping about 50% every year and SSDs are still welcomed by the market. It is expected that the traditional HHDs would come to an end finally and lots of people in our society believe that HHDs would be replaced by SSDs in the near future. However, some market analysts do not agree with this idea, and they insist that the HHDs would never disappear from our society. Although the price of SSDs is dropping greatly, HHDs’ price is declining rapidly as well.

SSDs industry is responding for the demand of larger capacity. Some of these disks are 3.5-inch hard disks; some are PCLE disks and even larger capacity hard disks are introduced constantly. On the other hand, OCZ has entered a competition based on PCLE SSDs, and these disks are usually faster than the SATA 2.0 disks, but their prices are very expensive. Hoping the price would be lower with the coming of OCZ. If so, people would be able to afford SSDs without second mortgage.

Besides these, it is easy to find that some companies are using SSDs through innovative ways. They use them by combining with the traditional HHDs. This combination takes the advantage of SSDs’ stability by comparing with DRAM, and could be used for high-speed cache devices. Therefore, obviously, SSDs are booming now.
